It's all about CAREERS!

The job application season is well underway for both our final year undergraduates and our MSc students. The season kicked off with an introductory session on careers in the property industry with Nick French (Programme Leader for the MSc Real Estate) and Lorna Froud (Head of the Careers and Employment Centre at Oxford Brookes).

And then on 8 October students and staff were joined by members of our alumni society OBREMS and the Department of REC Professional Liaison Group for a whole day dedicated to careers. The day consisted of a series of presentations with plenty of breaks for networking and discussions.

Philip Parnell (centre) from Deloitte was Chair for the Careers Day. Here he is introducing Will Preece from Jones Lang LaSalle who gave a presentation on 'Agency - knowledge to underpin people skills'.

After a session on Valuation from Nick French (Department of REC), Tom Leeming (OBREMS) and Laura Salisbury Jones (Savills) talked about the work of OBREMS - the Oxford Brookes Real Estate Management Society.

Next came a presentation from Philip Parnell (Deloitte) entitled ' Working in the Real World' which was followed by a really excellent talk from Laura Salisbury Jones from Savills (above) about things to know when seeking a job.

The Panel Session and Questions before lunch.

After lunch the day continued with another series of presentations:

  • Understanding Real Estate Markets, by Angus McIntosh (Oxford Brookes)
  • Applying to the 'BIG' Firms, by Sally Chacatté (Κnight Frank)
  • Working 'client side', by Tom Leeming (OBREMS)
  • Working outside London, by Sean Brew (Lambert Smith Hampton)
  • The APC Process, by Nick French (Oxford Brookes/RICS)

The day finished with a drinks reception (sponsored by Savills) in the atrium of the Abercrombie Building.

The next event was the Real Estate and Construction Careers Fair which took place on 14 October. This year 38 companies attended the fair as well as staff from the Oxford Brookes Careers and Employment Centre. Another great day for networking. I went along to take some photos:

The season will be rounded off with lunchtime sessions on: CV writing and applications (Lorna Froud); Development Surveying (Alex Reynolds of SEGRO) and Assessment Centres - what to expect (Jane Evans of Gerald Eve).

Finally, if you are a graduate of any of our degree programmes in real estate, you can increase your professional network by joining our alumni group on LinkedIn:
