The Certificate of Real Estate Investment Finance was developed by the Asia Pacific Real Association (APREA) in 2007. Fast forward to 2014 and the Department of Real Estate and Construction at Oxford Brookes University was delighted to take over the delivery of CREIF and has continued to work with APREA to further expand and develop the programme.

CREIF was originally developed in response to industry demand for a practical and applied programme that would meet the professional education needs of the dynamic real estate industry in Asia to give real estate professionals across all sectors the opportunity to gain a better understanding of the real estate investment market. CREIF students have included asset managers, fund managers, investment bankers, project managers, valuers, developers and analysts.

CREIF has been very successful and students began to ask APREA to develop a postgraduate-level REIF programme linked to a major university. Lim Swe Guan, Chairman of APREA explains:

"Last year we surveyed the industry to get their views on the CREIF programme and its future development - a strong view was expressed that it should be aligned with a relevant teaching institution. We are proud to have created a training programme that has been so relevant and beneficial to the Asia Pacific real estate industry, and are delighted to have formed this relationship with Oxford Brookes University to continue the development and reach of the programme".

APREA approached Oxford Brookes University and so the further development of CREIF began. Following formal university approval, the Department of Real Estate and Construction is now offering three routes through the Real Estate Investment Finance (REIF) programme. The new MSc and Postgraduate Diploma build on the structure and success of CREIF and offer students the opportunity to study Real Estate Investment Finance in more depth. The features that made CREIF so successful have been maintained and enhanced:

  • online, distance-learning tailored to students who are also working full-time
  • a practically based course which makes extensive use of real-life examples
  • opportunities to share knowledge and experience across the world
  • face-to-face networking (via a series of Network Seminars)
  • input from local experts

The REIF programme covers the following subject areas in 4 core modules:

1. Real Estate Investment Markets
2. Applied Real Estate Valuation
3. Real Estate Investment Finance
4. Legal and Regulatory Considerations

And students can choose to study the REIF programme at one of three levels:

CPD/Training Certificate (CREIF)
Postgraduate Diploma REIF
MSc REIF (accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors)

Each level follows the 4 core modules. Students taking the MSc REIF will also take two research-based modules.
